Digital Data Management Trends in 2018

Digitization is the buzzword of the next decade.

It presents a great opportunity for all businesses to rise to the next level in terms of speed of innovation, time to market, distribution and fulfillment, lower cost and time for service delivery, optimize resource usage etc. What is interesting is over 90% of all the digital data generated (also known as Big Data), is unstructured data comprising Emails, Files, Music, Video, Images etc.

Big Data is the New Oil

Today Big Data is no longer generated only by large e-commerce companies, stock exchanges, airlines, etc. Due to rapid digitization, even smaller organizations are able to collect and store Big Data that can help reshape their businesses. Most of this data has no end of life and is critical for deeper analysis, and to uncover patterns to provide market insights.

The Death of Backups

Most organizations believe that their data security requirements are met as long as they are maintaining backups. Backups are typically snapshots and periodic by nature, and don’t guarantee on capturing changes between two backup runs. In 2018, newer tools will be deployed which can archive data in real time, to a separate operational infrastructure, ensure that all of that data is search ready, available on-demand and serve as a “near source” of data for the business.

Big Data on Tap

Traditionally, businesses have been deploying teams to locate offline storage devices, mount them for access, sync them to the clients and then locate the required information – which could take days. In 2018 and beyond, businesses would expect “data on tap”. They would be able to search for any data of any period on-demand, in seconds via a tamper-proof, one-way discovery console.

Inadequacy of In-premise

Any modern business will generate 10’s of terabytes of data year on year, which may need retention over several years. Deploying systems and teams, to manage this humongous growth in premise, will turn out to be costly and complex. There is already a trend of moving workloads on to the cloud, having the elasticity to compute and storage. Cloud platforms like AWS and Cloud native SaaS tools for archival are the best bet as core architectural components since they provide opex based costing, pay per use, ability to scale up easily while keeping all the data online and extremely durable.
